San Lorenzo de El Escorial
Finished in 1584, this enormous monastery is considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world, and in 1984 it was recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage monument.
El Escorial is absolutely stunning - an impressive architectural complex built of granite and slate under the orders of King Philip II.
There are lots of things to see, from the Monastery Library which houses around 40,000 titles, to the Paintings Rooms, to the King's Courtyard and the Monks' Gardens. It is a real jewel
The village of El Escorial grew around the building of the monastery, has become a popular spot for holidaying Spaniards, and it also houses the only court theatre still in use in Europe - the Charles III Royal Coliseum.
It is approximately 40 minutes' drive from El Caracol.
