Segovia

Segovia is a UNESCO World Heritage city, and it is Castilla at its very best - the old town is made up of beautiful labirynth-like alleyways, and the city has the highest concentration of Romanesque churches in all of Europe. It is absolutely magnificent, and a wonderful place to pick up some stunning ceramics.

On the north-west end of the walled city is the Alcazar Castle, a source of inspiration for Walt Disney and where Queen Isabel promised Columbus the financial backing he needed to discover America.

The city is perhaps best known for its Roman aqueduct, a magnificent sight which dominates the city, rising to 95 ft in height and which carried water from over 15 km away. This is the largest and best preserved Roman aqueduct in the world, and it is remarkable also for the fact that its enormous granite blocks are joined by gravity alone.

Getting there from El Caracol - Segovia is about an hour away from El Caracol. At the bottom of the drive, turn left and head for the mountains. Segovia is well signposted from there.
